Position: Cultural Orientation Coordinator
Reports to: Resettlement Manager
Status: Full-time/Exempt
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada

The African Community Center is a branch office of the Ethiopian Community Development Council, Inc. (ECDC), non–profit, national community-based, non-governmental organization.

Job Summary:
This position is responsible for provision of culturally appropriate orientation services to refugee individuals and families resetting through the African Community Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, design, organize, implement and conduct a cultural and community orientation program, including materials and curriculum, relevant to the resettlement of refugees;
  • Develop creative solutions and practices to maximize refugee understanding of relevant and essential information;
  • Provide orientation on Housing and Personal Safety immediately upon arrival;
  • Provide orientation on the following topics: Resettlement, Immigration and Legal Requirements, Public Services, Health, Housing, Transportation, U.S. Laws and Policies, Knowing Your Community, Education, Employment, etc. 
  • Develop, coordinate and teach job readiness classes and training workshops in consultation with the employment team to provide a strategic approach to preparing refugees to enter the job market;
  • Monitor and assess effectiveness of instruction, content and organization of workshops and make necessary modifications to improve learning outcomes;
  • Complete Cultural Orientation Checklist and Cultural Orientation Assessment with clients;
  • Assist with reports and case file documentation as necessary;
  • Assist with enrollment in various training programs and provide educational support and tutoring to participating clients;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A) or equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.  
  • Teaching experience with adult students and students from different cultural backgrounds, preferred
  • Language capacity in common refugee language(s), preferred.
  • Knowledge of domestic refugee resettlement, overseas refugee processing, and refugee and immigration policy issues is a plus. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask effectively;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment;
  • Good command of English speaking and writing skills;
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgment and make decision within the scope of assigned responsibilities;
  • Ability to plan workload, manage multiple assignments, 
  • Ability to relate professionally to and collaborate with diverse individuals in a multicultural environment.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Must have a driver’s license and a good driving record.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate physical activity, which includes standing, sitting, lifting and or/walking.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal parameters.
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

Environmental Factors:
Work is primarily indoors in a climate-controlled building and for periods of time outdoors.  

Contact with Others:
Position involves regular contact with ECDC HQ, local service providers and ACC-LV staff and clients.  

Performance Criteria
Related to job responsibilities, core competencies, and performance goals set annually in consultation with the Director.
